How to Find Duplicate Files on Mac

Find and remove duplicate files on macOS using Finder Smart Folders, or a duplicate file finder that compares content instead of just file names.

Published:

macOS has no built-in duplicate file finder, so you find duplicates either approximately — with Finder Smart Folders — or accurately, with a duplicate file finder that compares file contents, not just names.

Method 1: Finder Smart Folders (Approximate)

  1. In Finder, choose File → New Smart Folder.
  2. Click +, set a filter such as Kind is Image or File size is greater than 100 MB.
  3. Sort by name and look for files with identical names like photo.jpg and photo 2.jpg.

This catches obvious copies but misses duplicates with different names — and cannot confirm two files are actually identical.

Method 2: Terminal (Exact, but Manual)

Generate checksums to confirm two files are identical:

md5 "file-a.jpg" "file-b.jpg"

Identical checksums mean identical contents. This is precise but impractical for thousands of files.

Method 3: Duplicate File Finder Apps

Dedicated tools scan entire folders, hash file contents and group true duplicates for review. Look for one that:

  • compares content (hash), not only file names
  • lets you preview before deleting
  • keeps one copy automatically and only removes the extras

Storage tools such as Neatwise combine duplicate detection with disk analysis, so you can find duplicates and see how much space they occupy in one pass. More options are listed in the file management category.

Where Duplicates Usually Hide

  • Downloads — the same installer saved repeatedly
  • Photos exports — images exported more than once
  • Document versions — final.pdf, final-v2.pdf, final-final.pdf
  • Backup folders — manual copies of entire directories

Before You Delete

Duplicates are only worth removing when they cost real space. Start with the largest files — our guide to finding large files on Mac shows how — and always review the selection before emptying the Trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mac have a built-in duplicate file finder?

No. macOS can group files by name or date with Smart Folders, but it cannot compare file contents. For true duplicate detection you need a third-party duplicate finder.

Is it safe to delete duplicate files?

Duplicates of your own documents and photos are safe to delete after review. Never delete duplicates inside system or application folders — some apps legitimately keep identical files in different locations.
